NEW DELHI: Punjab Advocate General Deepinder Singh Patwalia resigned on Friday from post after change in government.

Patwalia had taken over as AG effective November 19 last year, after his predecessor APS Deol resigned from the post.

Deol was appointed AG of Punjab on September 27, 2021 after Atul Nanda resigned with the exit of Captain Amarinder Singh as Punjab Chief Minister.

Days after his appointment, Deol had tendered his resignation after Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu objected to his appointment. Siddhu had alleged that Deol was a defence lawyer for former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini and Paramraj Singh Umaranangal, both accused in the Behbal Kalan police firing case.

Initially, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had not accepted Deol’s resignation. Later, Deol had released a press statement alleging that Sidhu was obstructing the functioning of the government and the AG’s office.

This paved the way for Patwalia to take the reins as AG for the Congress government. Owing to the party’s defeat to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recently concluded assembly elections, Patwalia was required to resign.

Patwalia is the son of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Kuldip Singh and brother of Supreme Court senior lawyer, Paramjit Singh Patwalia.
