NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday urged the Supreme Court to initiate a contempt of court case against former Congress President Rahul Gandhi for claiming that it has been sold out to the Modi government.

Its national spokesman Sambit Patra told a Press conference here that Rahul’s use of improper words against the constitutional bodies in the Ramlila Ground rally here is condemnable. How can
he say that the judiciary, election commission and the media are “sold out” and they are under pressure of the industrialists. Is it not a direct attack on the Indian constitution, he asked.

He also drew attention to the autobiography of Congress leader Chandrabhanu Gupta, a 4-term chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, on a rampant corruption in the National Herald, saying it is a reflection on Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Rahul trying to usurp the properties of the newspaper by floating on company.

Dr Patra also attacked the Congress for overplaying its slogan of “Garibi Hatao” (Remove poverty), noting that there were 22% people below the poverty line in 2014 when the Modi government took over while now only 10% people remain below the poverty line. As regards the most poor 0.8% population, he said their number has also not gone up and this has been appreciated by both the World Bank and the IMF.
