NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its ruling on 1,450 PG medical seats left vacant for Friday after the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) asserted in an affidavit that these seats of NEET PG 2021 cannot be filled since the software for the exam has been since shut down.
Responding to the Court’s query about why it cannot conduct further special counseling to fill up the seats, the MCC said the counseling for two sessions of 2021 and 2022 is not possible. It said the NEET exam for the 2022 session was held on May 21 and its results were also declared on June 1 while the related counseling will be over by the end of July.
On May 8, the Bench of Justices M R Shah and Aniruddha Bose had pulled up MCC for not conducting special counseling to fill up the vacant eat despite a shortage of doctors, particularly that of the specialists.
The Apex Court was hearing a plea by Dr Atharv Tungatkar, who appeared for the NEET PG-2021 and qualified. “The petitioner is constrained that precious medical seats may go unfilled and merit may be the casualty…..The modified scheme recorded in this court’s order 16.12.2021 does not provide for what happens to those AIQ (All India Quota) seats that remain vacant despite the fourth round of counseling.”
