NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday asked its former judge L Nageswara Rao to speed up fresh constitution of the Indian Olympic Association, incorporating amendments in administrative reforms and in conformity with the International Olympic Committee charter, keeping in mind the National Games slated in December.

A bench comprising Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Hima Kohli said the constitution should meet the requirement of the IOC for conduct of the sport body’s elections which were supposed to be held in December last year.

Advocate Rahul Mehra, who had initiated  PILs seeking to get various sports bodies rid of alleged entrenched vested interests, urged the court to record in its order to keep in view the law of the land, but Justice Chandrachud snubbed him that there was no need to say it when a former judge of the top court is handling the matter.

“Normally when we pass order directing district courts to act in a case, we say that they will act in accordance with law,but not in the case of the High court and Supreme Court judge, who always act in accordance with the law.

The top court in its hearing on September 22 had appointed Justice  Nageswara Rao to conduct election to the Indian Olympic Association  including preparation of its Electoral College and amendment of the sporting body’s constitution  with a goal of the development of the athletics and other streams of related sports in the country.

The top court had asked him to deal with the affairs of the crisis-ridden Indian Olympic Association with a mandate for “ensuring a fair and development oriented approach for the future of Olympic sports in the country.”
