TMC MP SEEKS MINORITY STATUS TO HINDUS IN MEGHALAYA

NEW DELHI: Trinamul Congress MP Mrs Shanta Chhetri(65) on Friday raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha for granting the minority status to the Hindus in Meghalaya in lieu of the Centre’s assertion in the Supreme Court.Raising the matter during Zero Hour, she said if the Hindus are a minority in a particular state, they should be able to establish and administer educational institutiosn of their choice in keeping with the rights guaranteed to the minorities under the Constitution.

“The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the states can consider giving the Hindus the minority status if the community is not a majority within their jurisdiction,” she said.

Chhetri urged the Home Minister to urgently direct the Meghalaya governmeent to grant the minority status to the Hindus by a notification as per Article 29 of the Constitution.

As per 2011 Census, the Hindus constitute just 11.53% of Meghalaya population, whilee 74.59% have converted to the Christianity.
