EGYPT PRESIDENT IS R-DAY CHIEF GUEST

NEW DELHI: In a first signalling better political and defence ties with Egypt, India has invited its President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to be the chief guest on the Republic Day parade here on January 26.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar extended the invitation to Sisi during his visit to Cairo in October. Siri has een Egypt’s President since 2014. The country is the second largest economy in Africa. Early this year, India and Egypt celebrated the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations.

Siri last visited India in 2016. He had met Prime Minister Modi at the third India-Africa Forum Summit in Delhi in October 2015. Both also met on the sidelines of the UN general assembly session in New York.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had visited Egypt in September and held talks with his Egypt conterpart General Mohd Zaki on the entire spectrum of their bilateral defence relations.

Egypt is among the nione countries invited by India for the G-20 summit to e hosted in Delhi in September 2023.
