NEW DELHI: The Mamata Government on Saturday moved the Supreme Court against deployment of the Central forces throughout the state in the Panchayat elections, in a U-turn from earlier stand to abide by the order of the Calcutta High Court.

Reacting to the development, Bengal Assembly leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the move by the state government and the state election commission was planned well in advance and so he too had filed a caveat in the top court soon after the High Court passed its order.

West Bengal Congress president and MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said probably on Thursday Rajiv Sinha had said that he will abide by the High Court order since no clear instructions came to him from the CM’s office by then.

He said now with the insstructions coming, he has taken a U-turn. The High Court has accepted the arguments of the Opposition and hence the state government has approached the Apex Court to stall deployment of the armed forces.
