NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s Dr Shelly Oberoi on Wednesday won the Delhi Mayor’s election, bagging 150 votes as against the BJP’s Rekha Gupta garnering 116 votes. She is the first woman mayor in the national capital after 10 years.

The AAP had emerged a clear winner in the elections on December 4, bagging 134 wards and ending the BJP’s 15-year rule in the civic body of the national capital.

This was the fourth meeting of the Municipal Corporation, after the ruckus between AAP and BJP in three meetings owing to Lt Governor Saxena nominating members and asserting that they shall also vote, an attempt to help the BJP win the top posts.

The Lt Governor, however, retracted after the Supreme Court last Friday ruled that the nominated members can’t vote.

The 39-year old Shelly is a visiting assistant professor of Delhi University. She had joined AAP in 2013 and became the first-time councilor from East Patel Nagar.

She has studied management from IIM, Kozhikode and earned her master’s degree in commerce from the Himachal Pradesh University and PhD in Philosophy from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
