BAN ON PAK MEDICAL DEGREES?

NEW DELHI: The Government proposes not to recognise the medical degrees from Pakistan for appearing in the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) to qualify for practising in India as doctors.

The FMGE, which is conducted twice every June and December, is mandatory for the students acquiring the medical qualifications from abroad under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

A report in The Economic Times says Pakistan uses its medical sponsorship programme to fund terror as the medical seats in Pakistan institutes are allotted to various separatist organisations, who offer them in turn to the students for a cost, thus helping them raise money for terrorism.

Officials claimed in the past seats have been offered to the family members of the slain militants from Jammu and Kashmir. Only to curb the J&K students going to Pakistan for the medical studies, the Centre has sanctioned nine medical colleges and two All India Institutes of Medical Sciences in the Union Territory.

Only last week, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had jointly issued a directive that the students holding the Pakistani degrees will not be eligible for higher education or jobs in India.
