NEW DELHI: The government on Sunday left at the international media centre of G20 summit at Pragati Maidan here a 26-page booklet titled “DEMOCRATIC ETHOS IN BHARAT OVER THOUSANDS OF YEARS” for the journalists from abroad to pick it up freely at the end of the 2-day world meet.
It starts with the Sindhu-Saraswati civilisation, Vedic era and local self-governance, talks of the philosophical foundations and Ramayana and Mahabharat and ends with the 18th Century to the Constitution of India and elections in modern India.
The booklet underlines that “Bharat is the official name of the country. It is mentioned in the Constitution as also in the discussions of 1946-48.”
“In Bharat that is India, taking the consent of the people in governance has been part of life since earliest recorded history.
“According to the Indian ethos, democracy comprises the values of harmony, freedom of choice, freedom to hold multiple ideas, acceptability, equality, governance for the welfare of the people and inclusivity in a society. All of these allow its common citizens to lead a dignified life.”
