NEW DELHI: In view of India hosting the 44th World Chess Olympid from July 2 to August 10, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed All India Chess Federation secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan till August 15.

Overruling stay on his election by Delhi High Court, a vacation bench of Justices M R Shah and Aniruddha bose noted that Chauhan has to remain in post since he is also the Olympiad tournament director. It also directed the Centre and Chauhan to file a detailed affidavit within four weeks before the division bench of High Court.

Counsel for respondent Ravindra Dongre contended that Chauhan has to go under the national sports development code, requiring nobody hold a post continuously for more than two terms and one has to secure a majority of not less than 2/3rd votes. He told the court that Chauhan has been running the federation for the past about 17 years and he got only 35 votes in the re-election for 2020-23, which is not 2/3rd of the total votes polled.
