NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday announced its ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in the form of a padyatra (foot march) from September 7 from Kanyakumari to Kashmir on the lines of Mahatma Gandhi’s “Bharat Chhodo” movement launched by the party this day 80 years ago that ultimately won India the independence.

Congress general secretary and chief spokesman Jairam Ramesh and spokesman Gaurav Gogoi told a Press conference here that this Padyatra will go on for nearly five months covering 3,500 km across 12 states and two Union Territories, in which former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will also join.

On behalf of the Congress, they appealed to all wanting to join the grand march as the gigantic national endeavour as an alternative to the politics of fear, bigotry and prejudice as also to the economics of livelihood destruction, increasing unemployment and growing inequalities.

Meanwhile,In a tweet, Jairam Ramesh noted that the RSS dissociated itself from this historic day when Mahatma Gandhi launched the “Quit India” (Bharat Chhodo) mass movement. “Shyma Prasad Mookherjee took no part, while Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Azad, Rjendra Prasad, Pant and many others were jailed,” he underlined.

in a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress has always fight the battle for the rights of the Adivasis (tribals) to land and forests. He said the government has brought the new rules to snatch away their rights.

“On the world tribal day, I promise to fight till the last breath to get them the justice. Jai Johar,” he added.
