NEW DELHI: Former Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu, 59, a tribal woman from Odisha who took over as the governor in May 2015 and completed full 5-year term, was on Tuesday chosen as the NDA’a candidate for the Presidential election.

“For the first time, preference has been given to a woman tribal candidate. We announce Draupadi Murmu as NDA’s candidate for the upcoming presidential elections,” BJP President J P Nadda announced after the BJP Parliamentary Board selected here for the contest.

PM Narendra Modi, party president JP Nadda, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and others were present at the meeting.
