GOVT CONFIDENT OF PASSING DELHI ORDINANCE

NEW DELHI; The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is confident of getting passed the Delhi Ordinance as the number game is tilted in its favour despite its National Democratic alliance lacking the numbers in the Rajya Sabha where it requires 119 votes as against the alliance having 104 MPs.

It claims the government was able to similarly get passed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Bill, 2021, making the Lieut Governor’s view mandatory before any executive action by Delhi government.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has mustered support of the oppoition parties, including the Congress, but their combination still lacks a clear majority to defeat the Ordinance in the Rajya Sabha.

The ruling alliance enjoys support of 5 nominated MPs and two independents in the Rajya Sabha. It is banking on the Biju Janata Dal and YSR Congress, who have 9 MPs each in the Rajya Sabha. They may support the controversial bill or abstain at the time of voting by the walkout as they did in 2021. BSP, TDP and JD(Secular) having one MP each had also sided with the government in 2021.

The government had brought the Ordinance to nullify the Supreme Court’s ruling giving the administrative power to Delhi government in transfers and postings of its officers. The Bill to replace the Ordinance is listed on the government’s agenda for its introduction in the monsoon session of Parliment beginning on July 20.
