NEW DELHI: In a major relief to the youths turning 18 at any time in a year, the Election Commission has notified four qualifying dates of January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1 for their registration as voters instead of waiting for the annual summary registration done ion January 1.

This ensures that one is enrolled as a voter immediately on turning 18 years and not wait till the next January 1, thanks to an amendment effected by the present government in the Representation of the People Acts of 1950 and 1951.

The prospective applicants who become eligible for registration as the voters on the first day of April, July and October can also submit their claims in Form-6 in advance during the annual summary revision carried out on January 1 as the date of draft publication of electoral rolls.

The notification signed by Ajoy Kumar, the principal secretary of the Election Commission, on July 12 calls for continuous updating of the electoral rolls, preferably in the first month of the relevant quarters. Those failing to file advance claims in Form-6 during the annual summary revision can also file the claims in the subsequent quarters of the calendar year.

It also provides for integrating names added in every quarter by bringing all families registered in the electoral rolls together.
