ONE-WEEK RELAXATION UP TO OCT 7 TO EXCHANGE 2,000 NOTES

NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India on Saturday extended the last date for depositing Rs 2,000 currency notes up to October 7, giving another one week to the public to deposit it in the banks.

The RBI reiterated that the Rs 2,000 note will remain a legal tender even after the deadline to exchange ends. The previous deadline was September 30.

Its press release says with effect from October 8, 2023, the deposit and exchange of Rs 2,000 notes will be stopped, but individuals and entities can continue to exchange these notes up to Rs 20,000 at a time at the RBI offices for credit to their bank accounts in India.

Data received from the banks of the total value of Rs 3.56 lakh crore of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation on May 19, 2023, Rs 3.42 lakh crore has been received, leaving only Rs 14 lakh crore in circulation as on September 29, 2023. Thus 96% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes have been since returned.
