NEW DELHI: Parliament remained deadlocked for the third consecutive day of the monsoon session on Wednesday as the Opposition members first protested before the Gandhi statue and then created a din by bringing packets of milk and curd in both the Houses to criticise the GST slapped on them and other packaged food items.

Both the Houses were first adjourned up to 2 PM, the Rajya Sabha within five minutes of the start and the Lok Sabha after 12 minutes due to the pandemonium as the opposition members left their seats and demonstrated in the well.

Deputy chairman Harivansh adjourned the Rajya Sabha for the day, shortly after assembling at 2 PM as he wanted Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge to speak on the mass destruction amendment bill on the agenda, but the latter started speaking on the price rise and other opposition members started slogans when deputy speaker stopped Kharge from speaking.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla carried on the question hour for 12 minutes amid the noisy scenes and reprimanded the opposition for the disruptions, even stating that he won’t request them to bring order in the House but he would take action.

When the Lok Sabha reassembled at 2 PM, Midhun Reddy in the chair tried to carry on the mentioning of the issues by the members for a while, pandemonium forcing him to first adjourn till 4 PM and then for the day.

Congress chief spokesman Jairam Ramesh tweeted that the Modi government once again refused to allow a debate on the price rise and GST levied on the essential food items, resulting in the adjournment of the Rajya Sabha. “If only the PM shows some sensitivity to address people’s issues in Parliament, this situation would have been avoided,” he added.
