PRISON REFORMS REPORT SOUGHT IN SIX MONTHS

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought the prison reforms report within six months from a 3-member committee it had set up and and listed thereafter a petition on the inhuman conditions in 1,382 prisons across the country.

Amicus Curiae by of a note highlighted the difficulties faced by the committee in finalising the report, A Bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Bhushan R Gavai was hearing an application for directions to the committee to submit the final report.

The committee, headed by apex court’s retired Justice Amitava Roy to look into the problems in prisons and suggest measures to tackle them. It is examining the issue of overcrowding in jails and lack of basic facilities to the prisoners.
