SC HEARING ON BBC DOCU ON FEB 6

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear onFebruary 6 a petition filed by veteran journalist N Ram and Advocate Prashant Bhushan and others, on taking down their tweets with the links of the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Modi in 2002 Gujarat riots.

Senior advocate Chander Uday Singh, appearing for them, mentioned the matter before the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India Djananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, that how their tweets were deleted usingemergency powers a and how the students in Ajmer were suspended for streaming the documentary. “It is regarding use of “emergency powers” to block clips and tweets,” he said.

The Supreme Court will also hear on February 6 a PIL, filed by Delhi lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma, challenging the Centre’s decision banning “India: The Modi question”– a BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots cases. He also mentioned it before the top court on Monday.

Seeking to lift teh ban on the documentary, Sharma also sought its examination to ensure the accused in the Gujarat riots are convicted. He dubbed the ban as malafide, arbitrary and unconstitutional.
