NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will be hearing on Thursday the case of the capital punishment awarded to three convicted for rape and murder of a 19-year old girl in Najafgarh area of Delhi in 2012.

A 3-judge Bench of Justices Uday Umesh Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi had agreed on March 29 for hearing on the issue of the sentence.

The victim’s body was found mutilated in a field with multiple injuries due to assault with objects like a car jack and earthen pots, smashing her head.

“List these matters before the appropriate Bench for hearing on the issue of sentence on April 7 at 3 PM after taking the requisite directions from the Chief Justice of India,” the Bench said.

A Delhi court had awarded the death penalty to the three culprits — Ravi Kumar, Rahul and Vinod — on February 2014 and the same was confirmed by Delhi High Court on August 26, 2014, saying they were “predators” moving on the streets and “looking for prey.” They have challenged the High Court.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family and activist Yogita Bhayana has filed an intervening application to assist the Bench, stating that she and the victim’s father were fully conversant with the brutal killing of the girl after raping her. The girl’s body was dumped in a field in Rodhai village of Haryana’s Rewari district.

“The girl was kidnapped by three in a car from near her house in Qutub Vihar area on the night of February 9, 2012 when she was returning from office,” according to the prosecution. It said Ravi Kumar had taken help of two friends to eliminate since the girl had refused his friendship proposal.
