NEW DELHI: In response to a petition by top women wrestleers of the country seeking registration of an FIR against Wrestling Federeation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP MP, over alleged sexual harassment, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that the authorities first intend to conduct a preliminary inquiry in the matter.

Appearing for Delhi Police, he said if the top court directs, they are ready to register the FIR.

“The reason I am troubling your lordship is because some preliminary inquiry is needed before registration of FIR. Some issues which we would like to examine before FIR, but if your lordship directs, we can register the FIR without that too,” he submitted.

He urgently mentioned the matter after the Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice on the peetitions filed by seven women wrestlers, returnable on May 28.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal had meentioned the matter on behalf of the wrestlers, statin that there has been inordinate delay in registering FIR, especially when POCSO charges were pressed. He said the allegations date back to 2012. The petitioners have been protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
