NEW DELHI: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Thursday announced that it has blocked eight YouTube channels, including one from Pakistan, and one Facebook account, claiming that they were spreading “disinformation related to India’s national security, foreign relations and public order.”

Since December 2021, the Ministry has blocked 102 YouTube based news channels and several other media accounts.

The latest blocked YouTube channels, seven of them from India, had over 114 crore viewers and 85.73 lakh subscribers. An I&B Ministry spokesman said fake anti-India contents were being monetized by the blocked channels on YouTube.

He said the purpose of some of the YouTube channels was to spread hatred among the religious communities in India, making false claims in various videos and fake news such as the Indian government ordering demolition of religious structures, banning celebration of religious festivals, declaring religious war in India. Such contents had potential to create communal disharmony and disturb public order in India.

The blocked YouTube channels are: Loktantra TV, including its Facebook account, U&V TV, A M Razvi, Couravshali Pawan Mithilanchl, SeeTop5th, Sarkari Update, Sub Kuchh Dekho, and News ki Diniya (Pakistan based).

The blocked Indian channels were using fake and sensational thumbnails, images of news anchors and logos of certain TV news channels to mislead the viewers to believe that the news was authentic.
