AMIT SHAH REVEALS ALL ON MANIPUR VIOLENCE: LOK SABHA APPEAL FOR PEACE

NEW DELHI: Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday spoke at length on the Manipur violence, leaving nothing to be said by Prime Minister Modi on Thursday when he comes to the Lok Sabha to reply to the no-confidence motion under debate since Tuesday and wanted the House to unanimously make an appeal for restoration of peace in Manipur. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also endorsed call for the appeal.

Amit Shah spent almost an hour explaining what all the government has done in Manipur. Speaker Om Birla read a one-line resolution on the whole House supporting the appeal for peace. Shah said he has been taking stock of situation every week by talking to the Manipur officials and so he can say that the violence is recediing as 107 persons were killed in the Month of May, 30 in June and 15 in July. He said the violence is gradually declining in the state.

Participating in the debate on the no-confidence motion on the second day, the Home Minister said he had himself gone to Manipur and later sent his Minister of State Nityanand for three days. In a political response, he said there have been violence in the northeastern states over the years during the prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi resulting in much larger deaths, but none of then home ministers visited nor did they reply in Parliament.
