NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday slammed the Modi government for suppressing the data of Covid-19 deaths as revealed in the WHO report a day earlier and demanded constitution of an all-party Covid-19 Commission to confirm the actual deaths adn pay Rs 4 lakh compensation each to the families losing their kins in the pandemic as set by the Supreme Court.

Congress spokesman Gaurav Vallabh harped on the WHO insisting that India had 47 lakh Covid-19 deaths between January 2020 and December 2021, which are 10 times the deaths admitted by the government.

He said the Congress had demanded formation of the Covid commission two years ago to analyse the deaths that occured due to unavailability of Oxygen, broken supply chain in case of medicines and vaccines. “If the government didn’t provide the medical care and facilities, this is the least it can do to pay respects to those who died,” he said.

Prof. Gaurav Vallabh said Modi government has let India down on the world stage once again as teh mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic by it is not hidden from anyone.

He said amongst the nations with the highest ratio of excess deaths in 2020 and 2021 as compared to the official reported Covid-19 deaths, India is ranked second with a ratio of 9.9x, behind Egypt (11.6x) and ahead of Pakistan (8x) and almost half of the deaths that until now had not been counted globally were in India.
