NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Tuesday cleared a Bill to merge all three municipal corporations of Delhi, ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, into once instead of their overdue elections.

The step for unification is anticipated to be introduced through a Bill in Parliament the next week. The Aam Admi Party, which rules the state Assembly in Delhi said the measure is to prevent it from capturing all three civic bodies.

AAP tweeted: “If the corrupt BJP believes that by merging all three MCDs, it would be able to avoid loss, the people of Delhi, in collaboration with AAP, will soon dispel the BJP’s muths in the MCD elections. The BJP would be unable to avert loss in the MCD elections.

“In the history of the country only once the Municipal elections were postponed by Indira Gandhi during the emergency when the Congress had feared defeat. The BJP is doing exactly that since it is losing the MCD elections,” AAP leader Atishi said.
