NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways is aiming to start trial run of the country’s first Hydrogen fuel power train by the end of this year.

The work is underway on the project to develop the country’s first Hydrogen trains. Railway Board chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti said running trains on Hydrozen wuld be a huge technological breakthrough in the country.

The Northern Railway has already awarded the contract to develop the hydrogen train and the work is underway, he said.

Lahoti said the Hydrogen train is a new technology at the international level and the Indian Railways is aiming to complete the project in an efficient manner instead of setting very strict timelines.

Presently, Hyderabad-based firm Medha Servo Drives is undertaking a pilot project to retrofit Hydrogen fuel cells on an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train. The prototype Hydrogen train is likely to start operation on the Jind-Sonepat route in Haryana next year.

Initially, the Indian Railways will run 35 Hydrogen-fueled trains in hilly areas under its Hydrogen for Heritage plan, the railway board chairman and CEO added.
