LAKHIMPUR KILLINGS: SC MOVED TO CANCEL BAIL TO MINISTER’S SON

From Our Bureau

NEW DELHI: The families of the farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kheri violence on October 3 last year have moved the Supreme Court to cancel the bail granted by the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad Bank on February 10 to Ashish Misha, son of Union Minister of State for Home.

Four farmers were allegedly run over by an SUV allegedly owned by Ashish, while a driver and two BJP workers were allegedly lynched by the angry farmers. A journalist also died in the violence. Ashish was in the judicial custody for nearly four months.

The killings are being probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the UP Police. Unhappy over the junior officers put on the SIT, the Supreme Court had reconstituted it, putting three IPS officers who are not natives of the state — S B Shiradkar, Padmaja Chauhan and Preetinder Singh. Shiadkar, a 1993-batch IPS officer from Maharashtra heads the SIT. He is presently serving as ADG Intelligence in Uttar Pradesh.

On November 17 last year, the Supreme Court also appointed Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain, former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, to monitor the probe by Uttar Pradesh SIT.
