NEW DELHI: Former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh (80) has sent feelers to his confidants that he intends to join the BJP and lead it in Punjab, but Prime Minister Modi appears to have different plans for him.

A report in Chandigarh daily The Tribune on Saturday said Modi wants him to be the NDA’s candidate for the Vice-President’s post falling vacant in August with present incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu completing his 5-year term. No surprise, however, if Venkaiah Naidu is given a second term.

The Vice-President’s election is scheduled on August 6 and the NDA candidate is sure to win since the voters are the MPs of the two House and the BJP has a huge mandate in the Lok Sabha to prevent any attempt by the united Opposition to contest for the post.

Two other names in circulation as the possible candidate to be the next Vice-President are: Former Opposition leader Ghulam Nabi Azad (73), who has been sidelined by the Congress since he led a group of disgruntled party leaders to write a letter to Sonia Gandhi for revamping the party, and Kerala Governor Arif Mohd Khan (70).
