NEW DELHI: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is to take command of the Opposition parties in their Bengaluru session on July 17 and 18. Earlier the proposal was for Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to take that responsibility.

The meeting will discuss the draft for their unity. The parties want to take a step further to establish the people’s confidence in the parties taking on BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar had offered to take that responsibility in the first meeting in Patna, but he has suggested to spare him as he has to rebuild his party in Maharashtra since after its revolt. All the same, he shall be given an important responsibility in the Bengaluru meet, sources in the Congress said.

The meeting will discuss the opposition parties fielding one candidate on each constituency in the Lok Sabha polls to prevent advantage to the BJP from division of the opposition votes, they said.

They said the Congress, however, does not want to rush with declaring the candidates  as the second day of the Bengaluru session will be concentrated discuss the seat-wise seats to the parties in each state.
