NEW DELHI: Maratha strongman Sharad Pawar(82) on Tuesday offered to step down as the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), only as a pressure tactic, knowing well that it is unconstitutional since the party’s constitution stipulates him to be the president for life.

No wonder he agreed to “rethink” his decision of resignation when his nephew Ajit pawar and daughter Supriya Sule met him in the evening to persuade not to resign.

When former Lok Sabha Speaker late Purno A Sangma revolted against him, Pawar disclosed for the first time that he is president of the NCP for life as per the party constitution and nobody can replace him.

The party sources said the veteran leader wanted to convey his annoyance over resignations by the NCP leaders. Ajit Pawar quoted him state that some people have been resigning from the party posts and he wants these resignations to stop.
