NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought Income Tax Department’s response to plea by online news portal NewsClick for stay on the tax demand. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih listed the matter next after two weeks.

NewsClick has approached the Court challenging income tax assessment orders dated November 3, 2023 and February 20, 2023.

Earlier, in November 2023, the Delhi High Court had rejected a plea in the matter by the online news portal.

The High Court had observed that NewsClick has a lot to answer when it comes to its financial dealings. The High Court added that there was no prima facie case in favour of the news portal. This led to the present appeal by NewsClick before the Supreme Court.

The counsel for the news site told the top court that it has been left helpless when it came to paying salaries to its employees as a result of the tax demands and pre-deposits.
