SC: POWER TO LG ON ALDERMEN TO DESTABILISE ELECTED MUNICIPAL CORPORATION OF DELHI

NEW DELHI: Reserving its ruling on Delhi Government’s petition, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said granting the lieutenant governor the authority to nominate aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi could potentially destabilie an elected civic body.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwaala questioned wheether the Centre considered thesee nominations to be of such great importance.

LG V K Saaxena had on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the functioning of MCD is independent of the governance of the national capital and asserted that the administrator is not require to take aid of the state government.

“Giving this power to the LG would effectively mean that he can destabilise the democratically elected municipal because aldermen will have the voting rights,” the bench said.
