NEW DELHI: In a big relief to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, the Supreme Court on Monday granted him an extended protection from arrest in the case of the Bengal coal scam.
A Bench of Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat also permitted him to travel abroad on his plea to go to Dubai for a medical procedure. It also lifted any restrictions on Abhishek’s freedom to trave abroad, as pressed by the ED.
On May 17, the Supreme Court granted relief to TMC leader and his wife Rujira Banerjee by ordering the enforcement Directorate to examine them in Kolkata rather than summon them to Delhi.
