NEW DELHI: Rebel Bharatiya Janata Party MP Varun Gandhi has hit out at the Modi government for “mediocre appointments that damage our human capital and our youth’s future,” while singling out newly-appointed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-chancellor Shree Dhulipadi Pandit for “mistakes” in her first press statement in English, saying it is “an exhibition of illiteracy.”

Tweeting on her statement thanking the Prime Minister and the Higher Education Minister for appointing her as the first woman of the university,

“Her statement is an exhibition of illteracy, littered with grammatical mistakes,” Varun said, ridiculing Pandit for using the word “excellences” instead of excellence,” “students friendly” instead of “student-friendly” and “would strive” instead of writing “will strive.”

Varun, who has been challenging his party since last year on many issues, including controversial farm laws that now stand withdrawn, slamming the economic policy and demanding “strict action” in a letter to the Prime Minister on MoS Home Ajay Mishra Teni embroiled in the Lakhimpur Kheri massacre, said Pandit’s appointment has “little to offer in academic vision, credentials or even the ability to communicate, is a path to mediocrity and long-term illiteracy for our human capital.”
