NEW DELHI: Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia of Uttarakhand and Jamshed Burjor Pardiwala of Gujarat on Monday took oath as the Supreme Court judges to have the full strength of 34 in the top court, but for just one day as Justice Vineet Saran will be retiring on Tuesday. Another vacancy is due on June 7 when Justice L Ngeswara Rao retires.
Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of office to new Judges in the auditorium of the court’s additional building complex. Justice Pardiwala will have a long innings to retire as the Chief Justice of India in 2030 after Justice P S Narasimha relinquishes the post of CJI in May 2028.
The Supreme Court collegium headed by CJI Ramana recommended the elevation of Justices Dhulia and Pardiwala on May 5 and the government lost no time in notifying their appointments on May 7.
CJI Ramana, who himself retires on August 26, will have to call another collegium meeting to fill up the two vacancies in May and June to leave the top court with full strength.
