NEW DELHI: Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed the Modi government for jacking up the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the scientific instruments from 5% to 18%, worrying that it will hit the scientific research.

“The Government is displaying its thoughtless approach and further reducing funds and resources available to the labs involved in scientific work across the country. Remember, this government has already cut 3.9% budget of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology this year,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Don’t let science suffer because of your Gabbar Singh tax. Roll back the GST on scientific equipments,” Rahul urged the Prime Minister.

He said: “Scientific advancement is the cornerstone for the development of any nation. The pattern of reduction in the allocation of funds for scientific research by the BJP govt is a worrisome sign for the research ecosystem in India.”
