SC REFUSES TO RAISE SMOKING AGE TO 21

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday junked a plea by two lawyers to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21 years and ban the sale of loose cigarettes.

Rejecting the public interest litigation (PIL) by advocates Shuham Awasthi and Sapta Rishi Mishra seeking guidelines to control smoking, a Bench of Justices S K Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia reprimanded them: “If you want publicity, arge a good case…Don’t file publicity interest litigation.”

The PIL wanted directions to remove the smoking zones at the commercial places and ban sale of the loose cigarettes near educational and healthcare institutions and also near places of worship.
