NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday closed the case of history-sheeter gangster Vikas Dubey killed in an encounter and directed the Uttar Pradesh to take appropriate action on the recommendations submitted by the inquiry commission.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said, “We direct the state government to take appropriate action on the recommendations submitted by the commission.”

The court also ordered that the commission’s report received by it be kept on the public domain and uploaded on the Supreme Court website. The report of the Justice Chauhan inquiry commission was submitted in the state Assembly.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the UP government, said the state government has accepted the commission’s findings.

The inquiry report says there are no doubts over the police statements on the killing of gangster Dubey and other members of his gang in Kanpur in July 2020.

Vikas Dubey had gone underground. He was nabbed by the Madhya Pradesh Police in Ujjain on July 9, 2020 when he had gone to the Mahakal temple for offering prayers. He was killed in an encounter on July 10 by Uttar Pradesh Police when he tried to escape.
