NEW DELHI: The Vice-President of India election on August 6 will have a direct fight between former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar(71) of Jhunjhunu Rajasthan and former Union Minister Margaret Alva(80), who has retired in Bengaluru in her home state.

Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh, who is the returning officer, gazetted Friday evening the list of the contesting candidates on the close of withdrawals of the nominations.

Dhankar has been fielded by the BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) while Margaret Alva is the joint candidate of the Opposition except for Trinamul Congress whose leader Mamata Banerjee said her party would not participate in the voting nor will it support Dhankar, with whom she had a running battle over the years for his repeated interference in the governance in West Bengal.

Only the members of Parliament, including the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha constitute the electorate. With the ruling BJP having a thumping majority in the Lok Sabha, the election of Dhankar is inevitable.
