CURBS ON MONEY POWER IN POLLS: EC TO SUPREME COURT

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Thursday assured the Supreme Court to effectively curb the menace of money power in the elections, one of the reasons for more money being seized due to the increased vigilance.

Its response came on a petition by one Prabhakar Deshpande, seeking directions with a comprehensive plan to curb excessive poll spending by the political parties and candidates.

In an affidavit, the EC contended that such a mechanism already exists. It said: “Time and again, the EC adopted various measures to curb the menace of money power in elections and will continue to do so. The affidavit is filed by EC’s Director (Law) V K Pandey.
