NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday transferred three petitions challenging the Agnipath scheme to Delhi High Court, which is already hearing petitions on it, as the top court felt “desirable and proper” to have its views on the issue.A Bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud, Surya Kant and A S Bopanna asked the High Court to expedite the hearing. It also asked Kerala, Patna, Uttarakhand and Punjab & Haryana High Court to either transfer any related PILs to Delhi High Court or keep them pending till a decision by Delhi High Court, leaving the option up to the petitioners.

It said the PILs filed in these four High Court could be filed as intervention application before Delhi High Court and the same will also apply to any fresh petitions filed in any High Court.

The Agnipath scheme, announced on June 14, provides for the recruitment of youth between the age of 17-and-a-half and 23 years for only four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. Protests had erupted in several states against the scheme.
