FAMILY STUCK IN MUSCAT FOR 5 MONTHS: APPEAL TO PM

NEW DELHI: Meena Pandey has written an open letter to the media to get her help from Prime Minister Modi in rescuing her and her husband Sushil stuck in Muscat for the last five months and no help forthcoming from the Indian embassy in Oman.

Her husband’s passport has been confiscated by the employers. He was working as a branch manager with Oman Trading Establishment, the distributors of Hyundai car. His passport was unlawfully confiscated by the company when he refused to lay off some local Omani staff working under him.

In her appeal, Meena fears threat to her husband and family, a reason why she has stopped sending their 13-year old son and 7-year old daughter to school. “We are living wit fear,” she wrote, noting that she can technically return to India, but she wants to stay back at Sohar for her husband’s safety as he is already under extreme depression.

It is not a new phenomenon. The Indians seeking employment in the Gulf countries are asked by unscrupulous companies to deposit their passport and then harass them when they want to resign or change the job.
