LIVE STREAMING OF SC PROCEEDINGS UNDER ACTIVE CONSIDERATION

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court may soon call a full court sitting to consider the live streaming of its proceedings, as contemplated four years ago by a 3-judge Bench.

Its E-committee chairman Justice D Y Chandrachud says there cannot be a debate on it in an open court since it is an administrative matter. He is already discussing it at the administrative level with the judges, he said.

He disclosed this last week while presiding over a Bench hearing a plea for continuing the Bombay High Court’s virtual hearing through video-conferencing. He said the Supreme Court can’t order all High Courts to go for the live streaming since all High Courts are independent in taking own administrative decision.

Until the Supreme Court develops the live streaming system, a suggestion has come to allow the live coverage of the proceedings on the social media like YouTube. It was submitted to the Bench that all government programmes and press conferences already go live on the YouTube and that can be considered by the top court also.

Already, two High Courts of Gujarat and Karnataka have started experimenting with the live streaming. In fact, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana had inaugurated the live streaming from the Gujarat High Court during his visit to Ahmedabad last July.
