NEW DELHI: National Congress Party (NCP) patriarch Sharad Pawar has convened a national working committee meeting here on Thursday to review the developments of the revolt against him by his nephew Ajit Pawar and decide the strategy for dealing with it in the Election Commission and the Supreme Court.

Pawar has convened the working committee meeting at his residence here, leaving for Delhi Wednesday evening after both the sides organised their respective marathon gatherings in Mumbai.

The Ajit group’s letter of June 30 was received by the Election Commission here on July 5, claiming that Ajit Pawar has taken over as the national president and his group may be granted the prty’s name and symbol. The letter doesn’t state when and where Ajit Pawar was elected the party president and how many participated in the voting.

The meeting has been called at 3 PM on Thursday by Sharad Pawar at his residence here.

The Sharad Pawar group also described as illegal a national working committee meeting reportedly convened by Working President Praful Patel on June 30 to get Ajit Pawar as the new national president of the party. The Sharad Pawar group said no such meeting was held on June 30 and gave names of at least eight members who did not get any notice.

The Sharad Pawar camp claimed nobody can take over as the NCP president since the party’s constitution, as approved by the Election Commission, describes Sharad Pawar as the life-time president.

The Election Commission sources said it has received letters from both sides, but they are not backed by the required documents to allow the Election Commission to examine their respective claims.
