ONSLAUGHT OF 4TH COVID WAVE?

NEW DELHI: India is not alone in the daily surge of the Covid-19 infections. The situation is more or less similar in other countries with a steady rise in infections. It appears to be the fourth wave of the pandemic that the scientists were warning about.

In the last one week, India recorded around 50,000 Covid-19 cases, the biggest jump in the number of daily cases since January. The infections have been increasing across the map from Delhi to Maharashtra to Mizoram.

Several countries around the world are facing a surge in COVID cases, including the US, the UK, Italy, and China. The United States too reported nearly 111,000 new COVID-19 cases every day the past week, according to the National Geographic. Authorities in many countries want people to go back to wear the face masks.

India on Tuesday logged a single day rise of 6,594 new Coronavirus infections, taking the active cases beyond 50,000 to a tally of 50,548 and the daily positivity rate at 2.05. Worse was Delhi which recorded 614 new cases on Monday with the positivity rate jumping to 7.06%.

Seventeen districts in the country, including 7 in Kerala, reported weekly Covid positivity rate of more than 10%. In 24 districts, including 7 in Kerala and 4 each in Maharashtra and Mozoram, the weekly positivity rate is between 5% and 10%, the Health Ministry reported.

As of Sunday, six states and Union territories — Maharashtra (14,858), Kerala (14,518), Karnataka (3,387), Delhi (2,247), Haryana (1,548), Tamil Nadu (1,231) and Uttar Pradesh (1,087) — had over 1,000 active coronavirus cases.

The nationwide vaccination reached 195.35 crore, with 15.65 lakh vaccine doses given in the past 24 hours. The Health Ministry has alerted the states with high incidences of Covid-19 to increase the Coronavirus tests which were very few at 3,21,873 tests in the last 24 hours. Only 85.54 crore people have undergone the tests.
