NEW DELHI: Notwithstanding Mallikarjun Kharge heading the Congress after his landslide victory as the Congress President, it is Rahul Gandhi who will take the responsibility for the smooth running of the party, according, says political analyst and former AICC secretary Pankaj Sharma.

In a tweet, he said it is wrong to state that the Congress did not conduct the elections for its president. In fact, the elections became necessary only six times in the party’s history of 137 years since otherwise there used to be no second candidate and hence one used to be declared elected unopposed.

He said though none from the Gandhi family indicated its nominee in the Congress presidential election, atmosphere was created that Kharge was the official candidate. Hence, his rival Shashi Tharoor getting 1,072 vote is great as it shows the strength of the internal democracy in the party, Sharma said.

He said though Kharge has been elected the president, the future of the Congress will depend on the internal appointments in the organisation. He said Rahul rightly said that the Congress President is the supreme authority of the party under whose directions he would function, but it should not be forgotten that Rahul is and will continue to be the supreme leader as his stature will further go high from the padyatra (daily walk) in the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
