NEW DELHI: Rains may turn erratic in the second half of the monsoon season, hitting the farmers in the rain-fed areas of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha and parts of Madhya Pradesh, according to Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency.

Conflicting atmospheric conditions in the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean could lead to a normal to above normal rainfall during the first half of the monsoon season augering well for sowing, but it may become volatile in the second half.

“There could be a battle between La Nina and Indin Ocean Dipole (IOD), resulting in normal monsoon during the first two months, but the rainfall could waver or become volatile during the second half of the monsoon, says Skymet president GP Sharma.

The monsoon between June and September is crucial for the farm output and economic growth in India since about 60% of the country’s agricultural land depends on the rainfall.
