NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the demand against its January 4 order to extend tenure of the mayors in Uttar Pradesh, rejecting the plea of the All India Council for Mayors.
Chief Justice of India D Y Chndrachud-led Bench had stayed the elections until the report of the OBC reservation committee, ruling that a 3-member panel run the municipal bodies. The mayor council wanted the existing mayors’ terms extended so long as the triple test process is not completed.
The UP government had appealed against the High Court, urging to postpone the local elections until the report of the reservation committee.
