Taking a jibe at Dhule-based private medical college for allegedly cooking up the records to inflate the number of patients in the paediatric ward of its hospital, the Supreme Court on Monday said the plot seems to have come straight from 2003 Bollywood film Munnabhai MBBS.
Justice D Y Chandrachud, heading a 2-member Bench including Justice Surya Kant, told senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appearing for the private college: “This is a case where in a paediatric ward, all children were admitted without any problems. Have you seen the Munnabhai MBBS movie, counsel? How did the hospital have fake patients? This is a case of falsifying records.”
The barb against Annasaheb Chudaman Patil Memorial Medical College set up on the highway off district town of Dhule came while hearing an appeal of the National Medical Commission (NMC) against the Bombay High Court ordering its reinspection, after the commission had cancelled the increase in the medical seats in the college fom 100 to 150.
The college was permitted to increase the intake of the medical students after it submitted an undertaking to match increase in infrastructure. However, following a surprise inspection on January 12, 2022, the NMC withdrew its permission to increase the intake of students.
The college had contended that the surprise inspection was not conducted properly and there was gross negligence in the course of
inspection.
After hearing the National Medical Commission and the medical college, the Apex Court set aside the High Court order and remanded it back for fresh consideration.
