NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India N V Ramana, who demits office in two days, on Wednesday said a person who retired or is going to retire from his professional life has no value in India.

His comment came during the hearing of a case relating to the freebies promised by the political parties during the elections to woo the voters.

During the renewed hearing that remained inconclusive on Tuesday, senior advocate Vikas Singh suggested that a committee proposed by the court to examine the issue should be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge.

When the CJI said the retired person has no value, Singh said: “It is the personality of the person concerned which impacts.”

The Supreme Court expressed displeasure at remarks against it by DMK in a TV debate. CJI Ramana said the DMK is not the only “wise party” as its representative’s comments would be viewed seriously by the Court.
